Sky Sports reporter Ted Kravitz apologises after making ‘awkward’ George Russell joke in front of Mercedes team members

  • Mercedes’ George Russell finished third in the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday
  • He was unable to pass Lando Norris in second despite his brake problems

There was an awkward moment after the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday as Sky Sports reporter Ted Kravitz made a comment in front of members of Mercedes staff.

The incident happened as Kravitz made his way towards the Mercedes paddock following the race.

George Russell finished third in Shanghai, behind Lando Norris and winner Oscar Piastri.

Norris had an issue with his brake pedal in the latter stages of the race but Russell was unable to make the pass.

And Kravitz poked fun at his failure to do so right in front of a number of the team’s engineers, a moment he then regretted.

‘George Russell, he can’t even overtake Lando Norris, who hasn’t got any brakes. What’s wrong with George Russell?’ Kravitz quipped to the Mercedes men.

The group saw the funny side before things became rather awkward and Kravitz backtracked.

‘I know, I know, there were reasons why. Sorry, that was slightly awkward,’ he said before walking on.

Piastri led virtually every lap at the Shanghai International Circuit, with Norris following his team-mate home as McLaren underlined their impressive speed by executing a one-two finish.

Russell was third ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who passed Leclerc with three laps remaining. Hamilton crossed the line a distant sixth but but Ferraris were later disqualified.
