Neighbours let their hedge run wild and then said it was my customer’s problem… here’s how we got our own back

Explosive neighbourhood disputes can be triggered by the most mundane things in life.

And perhaps one of the most common, seen time and time again across the country, is the humble hedgerow feud.

From boundary disputes to rows over hedges becoming overgrown, what seems like a solvable quarrel on the surface can often wind up in toxic – and extremely costly – court battles.

One gardener has this week shared a classic example of how a hedge can cause tension between neighbours.

In a video shared to his followers on TikTok, he revealed the tricks residents use when he is working in the neighbourhood.

‘How often have you heard this then…”while you’re here can you just”… on this occasion I had an hour so helped the customer out,’ he wrote in the caption.

In the video, the gardener can be seen dangerously scaling a roof so that he can cut back an enormous hedge that has overgrown and spilled out of the homeowner’s garden.

He reveals in the video that the neighbour said it was his customer’s problem despite it being their hedge.

The gardener was on another job at the time

After cutting back the hedge, he is seen jokingly blowing the hedge trimmings back into the garden where it has grown over from.

He quips: ‘The neighbours can have all that back.’

Later on in the video, the gardener reveals: ‘This job wasn’t even in my diary for today, I just squeeze extra jobs in.’

He jokes how he was told: ‘It’s just one branch… only take you 10 minutes.’

Panning the camera to the hedge sprawling across his customer’s roof, he quips: ‘That’s not fitting in the green bin.’

He adds: ‘Am I insured if I slip and end up on the floor?’
