Murder probe launched after mother, 40, is ‘assassinated’ on her own doorstep in South Wales – as man, 42, is arrested

A woman was shot dead on her own doorstep in what locals are calling an ‘assassination’. 

Emergency services were called to the Green Park Estate in Talbot Green, South Wales at 6.10pm on Sunday after reports of gunfire.

The woman, 40, who has a young son, was found with gunshot wounds and could not be saved.

A 42-year-old local man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

Local residents went on social media to describe the shooting as an ‘assassination’.

Residents were told to stay indoors and roads were closed in Talbot Green, a small town 16 miles West of Cardiff.

Police have set up several scenes of crime locations in the area and are carrying out house to house inquiries.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: ‘Officers and Welsh Ambulance Service paramedics attended the scene.’A 40-year-old woman was found suffering serious injuries – despite the efforts of the emergency services she was pronounced dead at the scene.

‘A 42-year-old man from Talbot Green has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

‘A number of crime scenes have been set up in the area and road closures remain in place as work continues to gather evidence following the shooting and enquiries into the circumstances continue.’ 

Detective Chief Inspector James Morris said: ‘I understand the concern this will cause the local community, and I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working at pace to piece together the events of last night.’

Local Councillor Sarah Jane Davies said: ‘My heart aches this morning as I think about the tragic incident that has struck Talbot Green.

‘My thoughts are with all who have been affected by this horrific event. 

‘We are aware of the seriousness of the situation, and I assure you that steps are being taken to address these issues promptly.

‘I have been in contact with Andrew Morgan, the RCT (Rhondda Cynon Taff Council) leader, to discuss our community’s concerns.

‘I will be arranging a meeting with South Wales Police and RCT to address these matters comprehensively.

‘Please rest assured that the safety and well-being of our community remain our top priority.

‘The Police will be issuing a further update soon, and I encourage everyone to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities.’

Locals have reported a large police presence with a helicopter seen circling the area.

Alex Davies-Jones, the MP for Pontypridd wrote on a Facebook post: ‘Please stay safe everyone and follow police advice to avoid the Green Park area. We must let law enforcement do their jobs and avoid spreading speculation.’

South Wales Police told Wales Online yesterday: ‘Emergency services are responding to a serious incident in the Green Park area of Talbot Green. We are asking members of the public to please avoid the area. More detail will follow as soon as available.’

Councillor Sarah Jane Davies, who represents the Llantrisant and Talbot Green ward at the Rhondda Cynon Taf council, made reference to a ‘recent increase in incidents that have caused concern and alarm’.

She wrote in a Facebook post: ‘I want to address the recent increase in incidents that have caused concern and alarm within our community. 

‘We are aware of the seriousness of the situation, and I assure you that steps are being taken to address these issues promptly.’
