Man appears in court over attack that left man critically ill

A man has appeared in court charged in connection to a serious assault in Limavady, County Londonderry, that left a 22-year-old man critically ill.

The victim was attacked in Irish Green Street in the town on the morning of Saturday 1 February.

Patrick James McDonald from Rossnagalliagh Park, Londonderry appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and a number of other offences.

District judge Austin Kennedy remanded the 34-year-old into custody to appear again next month.

A police officer told the court the victim was walking along Irish Green Street at around 03:00 GMT on 1 February when a car pulled up.

Mr McDonald, the court heard, got out of the driver’s seat and allegedly punched the victim to the ground.

The police officer said the victim remains in hospital where he has been moved to the intensive care unit.

Doctors, the police officer added, have found that he has has “reduced kidney function” as well as injuries to his spleen, liver and bowel.

The officer also described how the victim “has been ventilated in the last 48 hours.”

The defendant is also charged with stealing the victim’s phone and a set of keys and driving while banned and driving with neither a licence nor insurance.

He will appear in court again on 5 March.
