In 2015, a devastating incident in Calicut left an indelible mark on society. Two sanitation workers tragically lost their lives while cleaning manholes, and a rickshaw driver, who courageously attempted to rescue them, also perished. This heartbreaking event highlighted the grim realities of manual scavenging—a practice that not only risks lives but also strips workers of their dignity and safety.

This tragedy became a turning point, sparking an urgent search for a solution to eliminate such practices. It led to the creation of an innovative robotic system designed to clean manholes without requiring human intervention. The mission was clear: To safeguard sanitation workers and restore their dignity through technology.

Manual scavenging has long perpetuated cycles of danger and indignity. Recognising the need for transformative change, a group of innovators leveraged robotics to replace hazardous manual labour with safer, efficient, and dignified alternatives.

The robotic system, equipped with human-like arms and adjustable legs, operates effectively even in challenging environments. Features like night-vision cameras and machine vision enable precise operation in difficult conditions. Yet, the impact goes beyond the technology itself. Former manual scavengers are being trained to operate these robots, transitioning into skilled roles as robotic operators. This shift not only ensures their safety but also fosters financial independence and a renewed sense of purpose.

The challenges of sanitation and industrial maintenance are diverse, requiring flexible and adaptable solutions:

For example, gait training robots help individuals with mobility impairments, including those recovering from neurological injuries or conditions like cerebral palsy, to regain independence.
