NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to abolish National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and restore the previous system of conducting the examinations by the state government as she alleged that the present system has led to massive corruption .
“The allegations of paper leak, taking bribes by certain people and the officials involved in the conduct of the Examinations, opening of window to accommodate certain students to apply for examinations, grace marks etc.are some of the serious issues which need complete attention and requires a thorough, clean and impartial probe,” the letter read.
“Such instances jeopardise the career and aspirations of lakhs and lakhs of students who look forward to getting admission into these medical courses,” she added.
Mamata also urged PM Modi to reinstate the previous enrolment system where the states were allowed to conduct their own entrance examinations.
“In this regard, this is also to point out that before 2017, the States were allowed to conduct their own Entrance Examinations and the Central Government also used to conduct its own examinations for admission into the medical courses. This system was functioning smoothly and without much problems. This was better attuned to the regional curricula and educational standards,” she said.
“Further, the present system has led to massive corruption which benefits only the rich who can afford to pay, while the meritorious students belonging to the poor and middle class suffer and are the biggest victims.” she added.
The NTA, which conducted the NEET-UG exams, is facing criticism over alleged irregularities in the exams. This resulted in several protests across the country, with protestors and political parties demanding to disband the NTA.
An unprecedented 67 candidates achieved a perfect score of 720 out of 720, which added to the concerns.
Facing protests in several parts of the country as well as attacks from the opposition, the Centre removed the chief of the National Testing Agency (NTA) from his post amid the controversy over the alleged irregularities in NEET-UG and the cancellation of the UGC-NET Exam.
